Earth Day is this month, and we’re highlighting how you can GO green and help the planet while enjoying the ride. While so many of us know to reduce and recycle, reusing items can sometimes be a challenge. Stand up and traditional cyclists will know all about this — think of those bike components and parts that are taking up space in your garage! All kinds of bikes, ElliptiGO bikes included, are easy to tinker on, upgrade and customize. That often means that some bike parts — even entire bikes — get left to collect dust.
Did you know that your old bikes and bike components can be used for good? ElliptiGO recently worked with Village Bicycle Project (VBP) to donate more than 600 parts to help strengthen cycling culture and empower communities in Africa.
VBP describes their amazing work:
“Our programs couple quality subsidized bicycles with hands-on maintenance training for new owners. We give village bike mechanics detailed training along with specialized bike tools and spare parts. This comprehensive, holistic approach ensures that bikes will be dependable, affordable and sustainable transportation. Women and girls, who are frequently marginalized, are specifically targeted for inclusion in programs which begin to address the gender inequalities that limit their access to bicycles.
VBP programs make cycling an attractive choice for entire communities, as improved mobility enables growth in productivity with better access to jobs, schools, and healthcare, not to mention the environmental and health benefits of cycling.”
