Usually at this time of year, I’m getting excited for the Five Boro Bike Tour in New York City. With more than 30,000 participants, Five Boro is the largest bike ride in the US. More importantly, it has become the second-largest gathering of ElliptiGO riders each year and certainly one of the most fun. In previous years, the ride took place on the first Sunday of May until last year, in 2020 it was postponed and then canceled. Unfortunately, this year’s edition was postponed and is likely to be canceled as well.
I used to live in Manhattan and I love visiting what I will always refer to as “The City.” There’s no better time for me in NYC than the Five Boro weekend with Team ElliptiGO. More than the ride itself (which is great – covering 40 miles of closed roads through all 5 boroughs), it’s the dinners, ElliptiGO group rides throughout the city, and late night get-togethers that makes the weekend so special. Something magical happens when 75+ ElliptiGO riders descend on NYC from all over the world to spend a weekend together. I miss that magic.
The good news is that events are starting to happen again. The Global ElliptiGO Riders Club has ElliptiGO events scheduled for Florida, California and Michigan in May. These will be smaller than usual, but still offer a great way for ElliptiGO riders to get together and enjoy some fun group rides. There’s also the Bike for Humanity ride this Saturday. It’s a virtual ride put together by Bill Walton to promote getting more kids on bikes. Last year more than 1,000 ElliptiGO riders from a dozen countries participated, making it the largest ElliptiGO event ever. It’s going to be a great event again this year. If you’d like to join in the fun this weekend, you can sign up and ride for free or make a donation .
I’m optimistic that events will be back to normal this summer and that the annual ElliptiGO Rally and World Championships Weekend will be as fun as ever. It’s on October 22 – 24 this year in Solana Beach, with the race up Palomar on October 23rd. Personally, I can’t wait to welcome everyone for that event and to share the joy of ElliptiGO with the community. That has been the best part of this 15-year experience for me and I’m excited for those opportunities to return.
Until then, I hope you are having fun and enjoying the spring riding season!
